The Miss North Dakota USA competition is the pageant that selects the represetative for the state of North Dakota in the Miss USA pageant.

North Dakota is one of the least successful states in the pageant competition. They have had only three placements and have never won the Miss USA crown. Their highest placement was in 1983 when Elizabeth Jaeger placed 4th runner-up to Julie Hayek of California. No Miss North Dakota USA has placed since 1996.

Jaeger is one of two Miss North Dakota USAs to have competed at Miss America. Four have competed at Miss Teen USA.

The Long-tailed Hermit (Phaethornis superciliosus) is a large hummingbird that is a resident breeder in Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil. This species is currently (2006) known as the Eastern Long-tailed Hermit, but it is likely, following recommendations from Gary Stiles in February 2006, ^[1] that the new name will be officially adopted.

The taxonomic history of this group is complicated, with similar hermit populations from both sides of the Andes being originally classed as a single Long-tailed Hermit species. The western population was then split as the Western Long-tailed Hermit, P. longirostris, leading to the renaming of P. superciliosus as Eastern Long-tailed Hermit. The further renaming of P. longirostris as Long-billed Hermit means that P. superciliosus no longer needs “eastern” in its English name.

A further problem is the potential separation of the paler, greyer, and slightly smaller southern subspecies P. l. baroni as Baron’s Hermit, P. baroni, although the opposition of Stiles makes that split unlikely to be formally accepted unless confirmed by further research^[2].

The Long-tailed Hermit inhabits forest undergrowth, usually near water and its preferred food plants. It is 13.5 cm long and weighs 4-6 g. The bill is very long and decurved (3.6-4.3 cm), with a red tipped black lower mandible, and the central feathers of the tapered tail are long (6.3-6.8 cm) and white-tipped.

The adult Long-tailed Hermit is mainly dull brownish green above with a buff rump. It has a dark mask through the eye, bordered above and below with buff stripes. The underparts are greyish buff in colour. The sexes are similar, although the female is slightly smaller.

During the breeding season, male Long-tailed Hermits sing in communal leks of up to several dozen birds, and also wiggle their long tails in display. Competitive lek singing can occupy half of the daylight hours, the purpose of course being to attract females. The female selects the best lek singer to mate with. The song consists of sharp of tsuk sounds.

The female Long-tailed Hermit is solely responsible for nest construction, incubation and feeding the young. She lays two white eggs in a conical nest of fibres and cobwebs suspended under a large Heliconia or banana leaf.

The food of this species is nectar, taken from large flowers, such as Heliconias, gingers and passion flowers, and small insects and spiders taken as an essential source of protein. Hatchlings are fed by the female with regurgitated invertebrates.

Long-tailed Hermits are trap-line feeders; they do not defend territory, but visit seasonal flowers on routes through the forest up to I km long.

2005年中國國民黨和平之旅是自国共内战以来，中国国民党和中国共产党之间首次最高层次的会晤，国民党主席连战成为1949年后第一位踏上中国大陆的国民党最高领导人。在两党会见后，双方对一中各表提出了新的解释。

背景

中国国民党在2005年初提出预备将在年内首先由一位副主席访问大陆，以开启两岸谈判大门，而主席连战本人也很早就有意愿访问大陆（国民党原先规划在2004年中华民国总统大选结束、连宋当选后，将由连战以总统當選人身份在正式就职前访问中国大陆，但后因敗選未能成行）。

国民党副主席江丙坤于2005年3月28日率访问团抵达广州，开始被称为“破冰之旅”的大陆之行。3月30日晨，江丙坤一行在南京拜谒了中山陵，随后动身前往北京，同政协主席贾庆林会晤。会晤中贾庆林转达了中共中央总书记胡锦涛对中国国民党主席连战造访大陆的邀请。4月1日正在日本参观爱知世博会的连战接受贾庆林代表胡锦涛提出的邀请，准备前往中国大陆访问。

由于中共方面对江丙坤一行高规格的接待以及其高姿态地邀请连战访问，再加上之后亲民党主席宋楚瑜也表示希望访问大陆，连战访问大陆的日期也从原定的5月中旬提前到4月底。对于连战的访问，中国大陆民众普遍表示欢迎，海外华人华侨团体亦有赞赏及反對兩派意見對立。在台湾，民众对连战的访问依然主要以统独意识形态明显划分，大多数泛蓝群众表示支持，而大多数泛绿选民则不满连战的访问。

经过

中正國際機場

连战一行近70人于2005年4月26日由台北启程，展开为期八天的“和平之旅”。当日晨，逾千人聚集中正國際機場，反對者與支持者爆發嚴重的肢體衝突，多人流血受伤。

部分泛綠群眾攜帶了大關刀、酒瓶、石頭、鞭炮、木棍、削尖甘蔗等物品違法闖入中正機場大廳，除毆打泛藍群眾及警察，亦投擲石頭、燃放鞭炮。而帶領的台聯立委羅志明、民進黨立委王世堅、徐國勇、林國慶、潘孟安、政論節目主持人汪笨湖、建國黨外圍團體台灣捍衛隊成員黃明財等人，則以妨害公務罪嫌移送法辦。

泛藍則由愛國同心會、新黨主席郁慕明、台北縣議員金介壽等人帶領，群眾中也有疑似黑道背景的黑衣年青人，專挑落單的泛綠老年群眾痛毆，造成多人重傷送醫。而當天揚言「血債血償」並與警方發生衝撞的郁慕明、新黨秘書長李勝峰、前竹聯幫虎鳳隊隊長王蘭等人也已依妨害公務罪嫌函送法辦。

在機場外，由台獨大老史明所發動的泛綠群眾也利用許多計程車在高速公路上，試圖包夾連戰座車以阻礙登機，但隨後遭到警方驅離。史明等人之後又在機場大廳違法點燃鞭炮，事後已移送法辦。

由於航警局處理不當，放縱兩派抗議群眾進入機場大廳，警力調派不當、又未逮捕現行犯。局長陳瑞添當晚隨即遭到撤換，內政部部長蘇嘉全口頭請辭、次長林永堅辭職獲准。

南京

国民党大陆访问团在南京敬谒中山陵连战在中山陵题词“中山美陵”，藏中山书院

访问团上午在香港转机，受到中共中央驻港联络办事处主任等人在机场欢迎，随后搭乘中国东方航空公司专机前往南京。

连战同访问团于4月26日16时40分左右包机抵达南京禄口国际机场，同行有中国国民党副主席江丙坤、吳伯雄、林澄枝、秘书长林丰正等。中共中央台湾事务办公室主任陈云林等在机场迎接。连战随后在停机坪上发表简短演说，连战称抵达后“有一种相见恨晚的感觉”。是夜，连战一行接受江苏省领导宴请，并下榻金陵饭店。

4月27日8时50分，连战一行人抵达中山陵，中山陵还特意为国民党参访团开启了中间的大门，但并没有限制其他游客的正常游览。在众多特意赶来的当地民众与两岸及国际媒体记者的簇拥下开始举行拜谒仪式。连战随后在现场发表讲话，表示自己是以“庄严虔敬”的心情前来向创党总理孙中山先生致意；他提到目前两岸关系严峻，但又以孙中山的遗言来勉励大家“不要忘记和平、奋斗，救中国”，“做一个扬眉吐气的中华民族”，并为中山陵题词“中山美陵”。连战是56年来首位拜谒中山陵的国民党主席。

同日，连战一行还参观了明孝陵、原国民政府总统府、南京天妃宫和夫子庙。

4月28日上午，连战一行离开南京，乘机前往北京。

北京

连战一行4月28日中午抵达北京，在北京首都国际机场发表了演讲，随后即与中共中央台办在钓鱼台国宾馆举行了工作会谈。下午，连战一行来到北京故宫博物院参观，据现场一位从事外事工作多年的工作人员介绍，类似当日清场的举措属故宫近年难见的高规格接待。中国政协主席贾庆林在17时30分左右，于人民大会堂会见了连战一行。随后访问团来到老舍茶馆欣赏戏曲演出。

4月29日10时左右，连战在北京大学行政楼礼堂发表演说并回答师生提问。然後連戰在此次演說中曾提到胡適先生和前臺灣大學校長傅斯年等人當年都是北大出身，再到臺大任職，傳播自由主義的思想，「所以，簡單地來講，自由的思想，北大、台大系出同源，可以說是一脈相傳，尤其在大陸，可以說是歷史上的一個自由的堡壘，隔了一個海峽，相互輝映」。但是這樣的說法卻激起了臺灣大學反對學生的不滿，他們認為胡適及傅斯年當年皆堅決反對共產主義，持護學術自由，兩校並不能相提並論，並持續在校門口抗議。

連戰随后参观了学校，以及其母昔日就读燕京大学的宿舍楼。15时，连战与中国共产党总书记胡锦涛在人民大会堂北大厅进行历史性会见，随后至福建厅举行会晤。这是自1945年之后，国共两党最高领导人首次会晤。17时30分左右，在北京饭店举行“中国国民党连战主席和平之旅记者会”，會後為規避法律責任，由国民党文传会主任张荣恭以「新聞公報」的形式，指出两党达成的五点共识：

一、在认同“九二共识”的基础上促进恢复两岸谈判；

二、促进终止敌对状态，达成和平协议；

三、促进两岸在经贸交流和共同打击犯罪等方面建立合作机制，推进双向直航、三通和农业交流；

四、促进扩大台湾国际空间的谈判；

五、建立国共两党定期沟通平台。

之后连战接受了媒体记者采访。

当晚，连战临时改变计划，再度同胡锦涛进行会面，据称是胡锦涛邀请在京最后一夜的连战一叙，并未谈及政治话题。

西安

4月30日11时25分，访问团飞抵西安咸阳国际机场，开始了连战首次重返出生地西安之行。随同访问的有中共中央台办常务副主任李炳才、中共中央台办副局长何建华、李维一等。陕西省委副书记杨永茂，省委常委、秘书长李希等到机场迎接。到机场欢迎国民党访问团的还有在西安的20多名台商，以及为连战夫妇献花的后宰门小学学生。

下午3时，连战重返阔别60余年的小学母校北新街小学（现名后宰门小学）参观并发表讲话、观看“小学长”的演出。随后向该校捐赠《台湾通史》等礼物并为校图书馆捐款。后宰门小学则向连战赠送了一幅由学生们制作的7米长卷画幅《长安自古多名士、江南春暮隐奇贤》。

连战结束对母校访问之后，一行人乘车前往位于临潼的秦始皇兵马俑博物馆参观。博物馆安排了盛大的解說團隊，一切比照元首規格，特准連戰親手觸碰兵馬俑，還預先遞上擦手毛巾，可是連戰就是沒有伸手摸兵馬俑。博物馆向连战赠送了出土于秦始皇帝陵兵马俑一号坑的席纹印迹土块。连战则为博物馆题词「遊秦塚而憫萬民，跨兩岸為創雙贏」。

当晚，中共陕西省委书记李建国在大唐芙蓉园以仿唐御宴招待连战访问团，李建国向连战与访问团赠送了碑林的拓片集和青铜器“轩辕圣土簋”，连战亦回赠台湾琉璃名家王侠军制作的工艺品“生生不息”等。随后，连战和访问团在凤鸣九天剧院观看了再现唐朝盛世气象的“梦回大唐”大型歌舞表演。

5月1日上午连战及家人、中国国民党大陆访问团赴西安连战祖母的墓地祭扫，并在近旁清凉寺上香。

上海

5月1日17时，连战按预期准时飞抵上海浦东国际机场。

5月2日上午，连战取消原定登临“东方明珠广播电视塔”的行程在上海香格里拉饭店召开“中国国民党连战主席和平之旅记者会”。随后赴锦江小礼堂拜会汪道涵。晚9时游览新天地，并于其后乘上海风采号游船观赏浦江夜景。

5月3日下午1点，连战乘坐上海磁浮示范运营线抵上海浦东国际机场，乘机经由香港返回台湾。

5月4日上午10点，蒋海兵参加了在台北举行的连战报告会。

历史有时走得很慢，有时走得很快。一晃眼，中国大陆与台湾隔阂了一百多年；一晃眼，台独公投制宪才刚喊完一年。一切成空，徒留遗恨，只剩城墙……天安门广场，游客打探连战生平与家人，历史好像断了，从满清又接回了国民党时代…… 清朝过去了，国民党过去了，文化大革命也过去了。一段属于新的历史，正关键性地展开。

与二二八事件前相若的是，熟悉的世界秩序崩溃了。二二八时的感觉是，好人根本不好；现在的危机是，坏人未必坏。两者都令人恐惧。作为台独对立面的中国，与台湾的区隔开始模糊。

陈水扁(中华民国总统)：祝福连战，连战谨守际份，对话的大门始终敞开。5月3日，陈水扁总统在太平洋地区邦交国访问时表示：“如果两岸和平是一出戏的话，连宋出访中国仅仅是序曲，主戏还没有上演。”为两岸关系埋下伏笔。同日，他还正式表示“希望大陆领导人胡锦涛能到台湾来走走看看”。

胡锦涛和连战讲一大堆话，都是骗人的话，对岸才刚刚通过反分裂法，就有两个台湾憨人（闽南语：笨蛋）到北京去说。连战回来有什么脸向台湾人民交代？台湾人落到这个境地，八十来岁的老人家相信也会流泪。

连战和平愿景没有内容，就像几年前一个大陆女性张颖自称会隔空抓药一样。（连胡会）除了开启国共合作另一部曲，就是弱化政府、分化台湾人民、矮化国家主权、混淆国际视听。

同样身为党主席，我为了宣传宪改，天天骑脚踏车满头大汗，想得头发都掉光了；别人却一生荣华富贵，到对岸跟敌人吃饭握手，命运真的差很多……两岸和平的基础，如果完全由中国任意界定，那么即使低头换得暂时的和平，这样的和平也是建立在流沙上。

Medical career

Carl von Rokitansky attained a doctorate in medicine on 6 March 1828 at the University of Vienna. As a young professor, he recognized that the still little noted discipline of pathological anatomy could be of great service to clinical work in the hospital, because it could offer new diagnostic and therapy possibilities to the bed-side physician. With this, after Gerard van Swieten, who was the founder of the first Vienna School, Rokitansky released a veritable scientific "revolution". With the establishment of the second Vienna School, a paradigm shift went into effect, led by Rokitansky, Josef Škoda and Ferdinand von Hebra, from the notion of medicine as a nature-philosophical subject, to the more modern, scientifically-oriented medicine. In this way associated with the specialization of the medicine and with the development of new disciplines, the Vienna School achieved world-wide reputation.

He developed also a method of autopsy, named for him, which is still one of two standard methods in use today, based on the in situ examination of the viscera. Rokitansky is said "to have supervised 70,000 autopsies, and personally performed over 30,000, averaging two a day, seven days a week, for 45 years" [1]

Philosophical career

Although Rokitansky defended the "materialistic method" in scientific research, he rejected materialism as a philosophical world view. In his commemorative speech on the occasion of the opening of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy at the General Hospital of Vienna, he warned against the abuse of "natural science liberties". Scientists should first regard humans as "conscious and free-willing subjects" and only then follow their urge toward knowledge. The feeling of humanity would be lost if physicians regarded human beings purely as research objects. Thus Rokitansky brought up for the first time the question of ethics in medicine. In another speech about the "solidarity of all animal life", delivered at the Imperial Academy of Sciences, Rokitansky showed his proximity to Arthur Schopenhauer's writings on compassion: "if we [... ] preserve and practice compassion", he explained "we are able to alleviate part of the load of suffering" of patients. Human generosity will be shown by our capability to accept the greatest sufferings by voluntarily renouncing aggression. Those who succeed in this should be our greatest ethical role models.

On 17 July 1848 von Rokitansky was selected to the be an effective member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. In 1866 he became its vice-president and from 1869 until his death on 23 July 1878, its president. Rokitansky felt that this "was the largest honour which I could enjoy".

Political career

By way of his leading positions in the most diverse academic and political institutions of the Austrian Empire, Rokitansky helped to shape the era of Austrian high liberalism. He represented liberalism among the educated middle class and strove for "freedom and progress", both to the university reform and to the substantial improvement of health sciences. Rokitansky was several times the dean of the medical school, and, in 1853, the first freely elected rector of the medical congregation of the University of Vienna and president of the Superior Medical Council. From 1850 until his death, he also presided the Physician's Society of Vienna, In 1863 he was appointed by Anton von Schmerling as medical adviser to the Ministry of the Interior. In 25 November 1867 he was "unexpectedly and unprepared" nominated by Franz Joseph I to the High Chamber of the Royal Council. Finally, he was elected in 1870 to the presidency of the Anthropological Society.

The VE engine is a 3.0 L V6 piston engine from Nissan. It is a derivative of the Nissan VG engine and was only used for a few years. This motor has an iron block, aluminum cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder, variable valve timing on the intake camshafts, coil on plug ignition, and an available variable intake manifold.

A major difference between the VE and VG30DE engines is the heads. The low underhood clearance on the 92 -94 Maxima demanded a special head to be developed with 30°, rather than 46°, between the valves. Lack of space also demanded a redesigned camshaft drive system, so a special chain drive was developed. However, the block is basically the same for both motors.

VE30DE

The 3.0 L (2960 cc) VE30DE produces 190 hp (142 kW) at 5600rpm and 190 ft.lbf (258 Nm) at 4000rpm. This motor redlines at 6500rpm. It was built from July, 1991 through March, 1994.

In the township the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $45,313, and the median income for a family is $50,595. Males have a median income of $37,989 versus $23,929 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,398. 2.4% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.6% of those under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

ASP.NET 2.0 Control Adapter Architecture

One of the topics that seemed to get the most interest was our plan to release some control adapters (with full source) that demonstrate how to build pure-CSS style based rendering implementations for some of the built-in ASP.NET server controls.
The architecture to-do this is pretty cool, and something we baked into ASP.NET 2.0 very early on in the project (early in the release we were planing to build mobile device adapters for all of the standard ASP.NET controls -- although we later backed off of this). What is nice about the architecture is that the renderings can be controlled completely independently of the controls developers program against (so developer used to using the asp:menu control continue to program against that object model -- regardless of whether it is table or css based output).
You can configure an alternative adapter render class for each ASP.NET control separately from your app code (this can be configured using .browser files -- so you can even specify different adapters based on the incoming user-agent). The ASP.NET control architecture then delegates to the adapter when it comes time to render -- and the adapter can handle all output generation (if you want to get even fancier you can override post-back and other life-cycle events with your adapters).

Watch Out for Request.Browser.MajorVersion in ASP.NET 2.0

I awoke to 1500 exceptions published to me this morning from our public site running ASP.NET 2.0. Not good times. "Luckily" they were all the same: Value cannot be null. It seems one of the components that we are using is calling Request.Browser.MajorVersion and blowing up on goofy user-agents. In this case the user-agent of doom is "YahooSeeker/1.2 (compatible; Mozilla 4.0; MSIE 5.5; yahooseeker at yahoo-inc dot com ; http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/shop/merchant/)". For whatever reason ASP.NET 2.0 cannot parse the MajorVersion out of that and tries to call int.Parse on a null value, causing an error.
Luckily we own the source code to this particular component, so I just wrapped the calls to MajorVersion in a try block so that the entire site doesn't blow up on bogus error codes, so hopefully if you run into that particular error you'll be able to track it down. I haven't tried any of the other properties of the Browser class, but if you are relying on them for anything you might want to first test them out with a rediculous user agent and see what blows up.

New XML Features in VS 2005 and .NET 2.0

I attended a session hosted by Alan Griver a few weeks ago at the Israel C# Users Group (IVCUG).

It was a lovely talk, who's first part centered around the new XML features in VS 2005. Amazingly, I don't think I've heard anyone talk about these before, because most of it was brand new to me!

Here's a short list of the new cool stuff he talks about:

- XSL is actually compiled in IL, which means you can actually debug into XSLT statements. Which leaves me wondering - maybe someone should write a visualizer for XSL objects?

- There's a cool XML toolbar to let you do all sorts of cool stuff while editing and viewing XML files

- XML Snippets: This is a cool thing. Let's say you have an XML that contains something like this:

- The properties window for an XML file contains a "schema" setting with a button that allows schema for the document form a bunch of preknown schemas (you can also add your own to this list).

One of the most thoughtful sessions of the conference so far was Julie Leung's presentation on Blogging as a Social Tool. There's more info on her blog at http://www.julieleung.com/.

Julie talked about the principles that she has developed for deciding what to blog about (and not to blog about). She did a great job using personal stories to explain how you can balance the goals of maintaing some personal privacy with the benefits of connecting with people locally and far away. There might be slides coming on the Gnomedex site, but it was the kind of presentation that you definitely want to see in person--keep an eye out for this one at future conferences.

Naming Guidelines and Visual Controls

According to the .NET naming guidelines it is often suggested to adopt camel case for private properties/fields and pascal case for protected and public properties/fields.

It is unclear how to name visual controls. Let consider a standard label which is protected in a web form. We could name as following:

LblFirstName (classic pascal case for protected fields)
StaticFirstName (contro, agnostic version)
lblFirstName (as usually I do)
_lblFirstName (C++ style)
For read/write controls we could use:

Fernando Elizondo Barragán is a Mexican politician affiliated to the National Action Party. He was the interim governor of Nuevo León (2000–2003) and former Secretary of Energy in the cabinet of President Vicente Fox.

Elizondo Barragán was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, into an upper-class family formed by a prominent local politician, Eduardo Elizondo Lozano, and Laura Barragán, a moneyed heiress. He completed most of his basic studies in Catholic institutions and graduated with honors from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León with a degree in law. In 1971 he received an MBA from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies.

He started as a lawyer in a well-known law firm founded by his father and in 1980 took over the legal department of Hojalata y Lámina, S.A. (HYLSA), a renowned corporation in the metal industry. Later on he presided over several business chambers, including the local chapter of the National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) until 1995, when he led the financial restructuration of Grupo Salinas y Rocha, a national chain of furniture and department stores. He left the company in August 1997.

State politics

In October 1997 Fernando Canales Clariond, a conservative tycoon, was sworn as the first National Action Party (PAN) governor in the history of Nuevo León and Elizondo Barragán was invited to the cabinet. He served as the State Secretary of Finance and General Treasurer from 1997 until March 2002, when he left the post to compete for the PAN candidacy to the state governorship, which he lost against Mauricio Fernández Garza, a wealthy cultural promoter and former senator.

In January 2003 Canales Clariond resigned as governor to assume the Secretariat of Economy in the cabinet of Vicente Fox. A few days later, the Congress of Nuevo León appointed Elizondo Barragán as an interim. His administration greatly improved the public perception of the conservative government but not enough to reverse the voters animosity towards his party, a tendency largely inherited from the Canales administration. On January 2, 2003 Natividad González Parás, a leading opponent to his predecessor during the 1997 elections regained the governorship for the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI).

Federal politics

After leaving the governorship, Elizondo Barragán served briefly as a presidential liaison in several national tax conventions. On June 1, 2004 he was appointed Secretary of Energy by President Fox substituting Felipe Calderón, who resigned to compete for the PAN presidential candidacy in the 2006 federal election. As a federal secretary, Elizondo faced a fierce opposition by the trade unions and the opposition parties in Congress to a constitutional amendment that would allow private investment and competition in the national oil and electricity markets.

The Akademische Orchestervereinigung (AOV) is the local orchestra of Göttingen, Germany. The AOV was organized by a collective of local students and other amateur musicians to bring high-quality music to the community. AOV usually gives four concerts per year.

An egalitarian organization, the AOV elects its own conductor, which as of July 2003 is Thomas-Michael Gribow. The orchestra specializes in the performance of classical art music as well as lighter, accessible contemporary music. Since 1991, the orchestra has performed the works of Beethoven, Bizet, Prokofiev, Lutosławski, Weber, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Bernstein, Wagner, Brahms, Henze and more. Sknyliv (Ukraine) airshow disaster

On 27 July 2002, 84 people were killed and over 100 injured at an airshow in Sknyliv (Скнилів) airport near Lviv, Ukraine. A Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 aircraft crashed during an aerobatics presentation. It was the world's worst airshow disaster to date.

The aircraft, flown by two experienced pilots, was reported to have lost power before clipping trees, at which point the crew ejected. The plane hit a stationary aircraft and burst into flames, then slid into the crowd of spectators. Both pilots survived with injuries.

...some witnesses at the site suggested that engine trouble could have caused the tragedy. They said the roar of the jet's engines had gone silent as the aircraft descended, according to television news accounts. Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma publicly blamed the military for the disaster and dismissed the head of the air force, Volodymyr Strel'nykov. The defense minister Volodymyr Shkidchenko sent in his resignation, but it was rejected by Kuchma.

Experts supposed the following causes of the crash, and subsequent loss of life:

piloting error
engine failure
violation of the flight plan by crew or ground co-ordinator
improper flight plan: particularly, mistaken correlation between the flight and spectators' zones
fueling the plane with an excess amount of kerosene, causing the Su-27 to become too heavy and not agile enough to complete the manouver

On June 24, 2005, military courts sentenced the two pilots, Volodymyr Toponar and Yuriy Yegorov, to fourteen and eight years in prison, respectively. The court found the two pilots and three other military officials guilty of failing to follow orders, negligence and violating flight rules. Two of the three officials were sentenced to up to six years in prison, and the last official received up to four years. In addition, Toponar was ordered to pay 7.2 million hryvnia ($1.42 million; €1.18 million) in compensation to the families, and Yegorov another 2.5 million hryvna. After the verdict was announced, Toponar said he planned to appeal.

To the credit of the pilots, eyewitnesses reported that they continued to attempt to steer the plane away from the crowd even as the plane was scraping along the ground and impacting other planes. The pilots did not eject until the plane became completely uncontrollable as it began to cartwheel. Staying in the aircraft when it was clearly about to crash was an extreme risk to the pilot's lives, and it is testament to the pilot's concern for public safety over their own.

While the pilots were assigned the majority of the blame, which included accusations of attempting maneuvers that they were not experienced with, one pilot had requested additional training at the airfield where the stunts were to be performed, but his request was denied.

It should be noted that a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 prototype fighter jet (a thrust vectoring derivative of the Su-27) has previously crashed under surprisingly similar conditions during the Paris Airshow. That accident happened due to flight plan error, but fortunately did not result in any fatalities.

Although the pilots have been convicted and imprisoned, since pilot Toponar is still in the process of appealing his conviction, it still remains to be seen conclusively whether the pilots could have avoided the accident given the combined possibilities of engine failure, orders to fly without sufficient training, and a flawed flight plan.
